Virginia Contractor Class A/B/C License

Requirements:
  • Virginia Class A contractors are required to sit for three examination portions: Virginia Portion, General Portion, and an Advanced Portion. Virginia Class B contractors are required to only sit for the Virginia Portion and the General Portion.
  • An examination is not required to obtain a Virginia Class C license.
  • To perform framing work on new construction, the Virginia Building Technical examination is also required to be passed.
Services:

There are three types of Virginia contractor’s licenses: Class A, Class B, and Class C. The licenses are generally based on the monetary limits of projects that your business will be bidding on.

Virginia Class A contractors can perform work on or manage projects that are greater in value than $120,000 or $750,000 yearly. The fee for this license is $265. A CPA Reviewed financial statement is required and must show proof that your firm’s worth is at least $45,000. Class A contractors must also have at least 5 years experience.

Virginia Class B contractors can perform work on or manage projects that are greater in value than $7,500 (but not more than $120,000) or greater than $150,000 (but not more than $750,000) yearly. The fee for this license is $240. An applicant’s firm must have a net worth of at least $15,000. Class B contractors must also have at least 3 years experience.

Virginia Class C contractors can perform work on or manage projects that are greater in value than $1,000 (but not more than $7,500) but not more than $150,000 yearly. The fee for this license is $175. Class C contractors must also have at least 2 years experience.

Reciprocity: As of this time, there is no reciprocal licensing.
Continuing Education: Effective August 21, 2006, all Virginia Class A, B, and C Contractor Business License applicants are required to complete an 8-hour pre-licensing course. Please contact our office 1-800-952-0910 for information on how to take this course or click here.
Exam:
  • The Virginia Portion has 24 questions and a time limit of 48 minutes.
  • A 75% is required to pass.
  • Topics on the exam include regulations of contractors; board rules and regulations; building codes; transaction recovery fund; Virginia erosion and sediment control regulations.
  • General Portion has 50 questions and a time limit of 100 minutes
  • Advanced Portion has 24 questions and a time limit of 60 minutes
  • A 70% is required to pass the General Portion
  • A 71% is required to pass the Advanced Portion
  • Fees for the exams are $35 for the 1st portion, $65 for 2 portions, $75 for 3 portions, or $85 if you are taking 4 portions.
  • Topics on both the General Portion and the Advanced Portion include business organization; estimating and bidding; contract management; project management; risk management; safety; labor laws; financial management; federal and state taxes; and lien laws.
