Requirements to Obtaining your License

  • Please note that the Commercial Business and Law Exam must be passed in addition to the trade exam.
  • A minimum of two years of residential and/or commercial experience within the last 5 years is required to qualify

Work Under this License

Work that can be Done Under this License

This license allows the installation, alteration, or repair of wiring-related electrical material and equipment used in the generating, transmitting, or utilization of electrical energy less than six hundred volts, including all overhead electrical wiring on public right-of-way for signs and street decorations and all underground electrical distribution systems of less than six hundred volts serving private properties.

This also allows but is not limited to installing, altering, and repairing, panels, controls, conductors, conduits, cables, devices, plates, electrical ceilings, control wiring; and electric heating, lighting fixtures, lamps, general outside lighting, underground and overhead feeder distribution systems, and installing window or through-the-wall air conditioning units not to exceed three HP or three tons where no piping is necessary.

You will then submit an application to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores. $350 for a 2-year license and $175 for one year.

Exam Details

  • 80 questions and a time limit of 4 hours
  • A score of 70% (56 questions correct) is needed to pass.
  • Exam fee is $75
  • Topics include: General Electrical Knowledge,Service, Feeders, and Branch Circuits,Grounding and Bonding,Conductors and Cables,Raceways and Boxes,Special Occupancies and Equipment,Electrical Power,Motors,Low Voltage,Lighting,Illuminated Signs,Fire Detection and Alarm Systems,Safety Information
